Highlights of recent activities involving the Strafford Town Democratic Committee. Be a part of the local Democratic action!
Pictured is the committee's May 2018 meeting at the Hill Library. To help inform local voters, the committee invited several Congressional candidates to speak at our meetings in Strafford during 2018. In May, the Committee hosted Deaglan McEachern (in the gray shirt, second from the left), who ran in the Democratic Primary for Congress. The Committee heard from candidate Mindi Messmer earlier in the year.
The committee encouraged everyone to take in this must-see political thriller (documentary -- this is not fiction!) on the affect big money is having on our elections and the importance of containing it. The conservative 5 - 4 majority opinion in Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission at the United States Supreme Court (1.21.10), ruled that money is speech, corporations are people, and transparency is critical to our democracy. Despite the importance to the preservation of democracy the Supreme Court of the United States placed on the ability of the public and the press to trace campaign contributions, such research remains beyond the ability of the average person to conduct. Research is very difficult and, in some areas, inconclusive. Campaign finance reform in NH must include strict registering and reporting requirements. If you missed the September 2018 viewing at Red River Theatres in Concord, watch for future opportunities to see this important expose of the extent to which money has corrupted our system of government, and what needs to be legislated to shift emphasis away from the power of money to the power of the people.
